हिमाचल प्रदेश की स्थापना 15 अप्रैल 1948 को स्वतंत्रता के पश्चात क्षेत्र 30 पहाड़ी रियासतों को एकजुट करके की गयी थी। 1 नवम्बर 1966 को पंजाब के अस्तित्व में आने पर कुछ अन्य सम्बंधित क्षेत्रों को हिमाचल में मिला लिया गया।
25 जनवरी 1971 को हिमाचल प्रदेश को पूर्ण राज्य का दर्जा प्राप्त हो गया। हिमाचल प्रदेश उत्तर में जम्मू-कश्मीर से, दक्षिण-पश्चिम में पंजाब से, दक्षिण में हरियाणा से, दक्षिण-पूर्व में उत्तराखंड से तथा पूर्व में तिब्बत(चीन) की सीमाओं से घिरा है। यहां की कुल जनसंख्या 68,64,602 और क्षेत्रफल : 55,673 वर्ग कि.मी. है।
