Full Form of UGC : University Grants Commission

What is the full form of the UGC?

No:1. The full form UGC is University Grants Commission.
No:2. In connection with the UGC Act 1956, it is an activity of the Indian Union Government.
No:3. Under the Ministry of Human Resources Development & affiliated with the ministry of higher education.
No:4. The role of the committee is to organize, evaluate and withstand maximum education standards throughout the nation.
No:5. It offers acknowledgement to colleges and universities approved by it and disburses funding.
No:6. The Commission has its head office in New Delhi and its regional headquarters in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhopal, Pune and Bhopal.

Brief History of UGC

No:1. The Commission was established in 1945 to manage and supervise all the operations of 3 central Indian universities of Delhi, Banaras and Aligarh.
No:2. In 1947, those duties were expanded to include all Indian Universities.
No:3. The University Education Commission was established from 1948 to 1949 under the chairmanship of S. Radhakrishnan to start investigating and suggest modifications and extensions to Indian University Education.
No:4. Compared to the United Kingdom University Grants Committee, the submitted its report in August 1949 to reconstitute the University Grants board.
No:5. In 1950, the Indian government decided that the UGC would handle specific grants to universities and higher education institutions.
No:6. The Commission was eventually launched on 28 December 1953 by MaulanaAbulKalam Adad, Minister of Education, Natural Resources & Scientific Research.

Functions of UGC

No:1. Maintain contacts between the State, Union Governments as well as various entities of advanced education.
No:2. Scrutinizes the fast expansion of college and university education in the area.
No:3. Set standards such as CSIR NET, UGC Net & ICAR NET for examinations.
No:4. Develop proposals for basic requirements in education.
No:5. Suggest protocols to the Central & State Governments for compulsory positive improvements in universities and higher education institutions.
