Format of TAN number

No:1. TAN is an alphanumeric number of 10 digits.
No:2. The first three TAN letters reflect a city, the fourth letter is the taxpayer’s initials, and the next five digits and the last character makes the TAN different.
How and where to Apply for TAN
Followings points tell us about how to apply for TAN which are :
No:1. For TAN fill up the form no. 49B. Then attach all the required documents such as identity proof and address proof and submit it at the website of NSDL or Tax information network facilitation centre.
No:2. On receiving the TAN application form, the NSDL department verifies the details and sends the application form to income tax department.
No:3. The Income tax department approves the application and sends a unique number (TAN) to the NSDL department.
No:4. The NSDL department informs the applicant about the TAN.
