No:5. It is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. As of 2015, Mr. Andrew WK Langstieh is the chairman of DVC.

Brief History

No:1. DVC was the outcome of various attempts made over the whole century to control the floods arising from the Damodar River in the valley.
No:2. The river spreads over an area of 25,000 sq.kms that covers the states of Jharkhand and West Bengal.
No:3. After the 1943 flood, the Government of Bengal appointed a board of Enquiry titled ?Damodar Flood Enquiry Committee.
No:4. This committee suggested the establishment of an authority similar to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the USA.
No:5. It also recommended the construction of dams and storage reservoir, and multipurpose development in the valley area.
No:6. Later, Govt. of India commissioned the Central Technical Power Board to study the proposal and appointed a senior engineer Mr. W L Voorduin of the TVA to study the Damodar River related to the comprehensive development of the valley.
No:7. Mr. Voorduin submitted his Preliminary Memorandum on the unified Development of the Damodar River.
No:8. His memorandum suggested developing a multipurpose set up to achieve flood control, navigation, irrigation, power generation in the Damodar Valley.
No:9. In April 1947, the Governments of Central, West Bengal and Bihar were agreed to implement the scheme and in March 1948, the Central Legislature passed the Damodar Valley Corporation Act (Act No. XIV of 1948).
No:10. According to this act, the central government, and the governments of West Bengal and Bihar (now Jharkhand) are required to participate jointly for the purpose of developing the Damodar Valley Corporation.
No:11. Later, DVC was established on 7th July 1948. It was the first multipurpose river valley project of independent India.
