What is the full form of BIS?

No:1. The full form of BIS is the Bureau of Indian Standards.
No:2. BIS is India’s national standards body operating underneath the aegis of the Indian government’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Nutrition and Public Distribution.
No:3. It is set up by the 1986 Bureau of Indian Standards Act, that came into force on 23 December 1986.
No:4. The minister responsible for the BIS ‘s administrative oversight of the department or agency is the ex-officio president of the BIS.

The regional office of BIS

The headquarter is located in New Delhi. BIS has five regional offices located in the various cities of the nations which are given beow :
No:1. Chandigarh
No:2. Mumbai
No:3. Chennai
No:4. Kolkata, and
No:5. Delhi

Main objectives of BIS

No:1. Harmonious implementation of marking and consistency assurance standardisations
No:2. Promoting consistency & quality control
No:3. Establish a strategic plan for the identification of standards and their alignment with manufacturing and trade growth.

Primary functions of BIS

No:1. One of the main functions of BIS is to develop, identify, and encourage Indian Norms.
No:2. As of 1 January 2019, BIS has produced over 20,000 principles, which are in effect.
No:3. These cover major financial segments that assist the firms to grow the product quality and service providers.
No:4. BIS listed 15 industries that are significant to the sector of India. It has a separate Division Council for the development of Indian Standard to monitor and supervise the activities.
No:5. The criteria are periodically reviewed and developed to ensure conformity with the global standards in line with technological progress.
